A Teaching Story
I have heard many variations of this story. I love teaching stories. Each time we read them we can glean another piece of wisdom from them, kind of like life when we are paying attention.
Turtle looked at scorpion and said, “Why would I ever give you a ride. You would certainly sting me and I would surely die.”
“Why would I sting you when you were doing me the kindness of giving me a ride? Besides, I would drown and die too if I stung you.”
Turtle though about scorpions words for while and then seeing the wisdom in them offered him a ride. About half way across the pond turtle felt a painful sting on his neck. He could feel the poison flowing through his body. Just before he lost consciousness he asked scorpion, “Why did you bite me? We will both die now.”
Scorpion sadly replied, “It is my nature.”
What is your nature?
To me the main purpose of the Toltec tradition is to change your point of creation from your mind to your spirit. When we are aligned with our mind our filter system will cause us to make choices that are not very beneficial in the long run. As we learn to align ourselves with our spirit our choices become much more loving and far sighted. You are an energy that gives life to your body, your body is merely your vehicle for this lifetime. Much like the scorpion when we align ourselves with our body we make choices that don’t serve us in the long run.
What can you do to align more fully with your spirit?
What can you do on a daily basis to align with your spirit? I find creating bookends extremely useful. Bookends are something you do every morning and each evening to remind you that your intent is to deepen your connection to your spirit. I start my day with meditation and usually write in my journal.
What are you willing to do to get in touch with your true nature?
With love and aloha,
